The power of PR and how to hack it

What is PR?

PR is short for ‘Public Relations’ but could also be synonymous with ‘Reputation Management’. It refers to the strategic communication you have with the public and the image that you want to promote. In essence it is a means of getting attention and shaping public opinion of your business or brand.

Why is it important?

Good PR can have a hugely positive impact on the credibility of your brand. Building trust with potential consumers of your product will make them more likely to buy from you. Through PR you can cultivate status as an expert in your field.

How does it differ from other forms of marketing?

PR is a way of reaching a new and different audience. Sure, maybe you’re churning out tons of amazing content across socials or you’re super consistent with your email marketing, perhaps you’ve even dabbled in some paid advertising. But, how are you getting more eyes on your reels or more signups to your newsletter?

What can be defined as ‘PR’ activity?

  • Your product or brand is featured in an article (online or print)

  • Podcast interviews

  • Radio or TV appearances

  • Providing ‘expert’ quotes for news topics relating to your field.

  • Participating in industry events e.g. a panel discussion

How do you get started?

  • Get clear about your target market and think about the types of media that your ideal customer would read/watch/listen to.

  • Draw up a list of publications (online or print), podcasts, TV or radio shows or other media outlets that would be a good fit for your brand.

  • Research the journalists or content creators associated with delivering content for your ‘target’ media list.

  • Create a press release for your product/business or create blog style content that would demonstrate your status as an ‘expert’ in your field.

  • Don’t be shy! Reach out to your ‘target list’, start to build rapport and grow your network.

Our top tip…

If at first you don’t succeed, try try try again! Don’t expect to send a handful of emails and suddenly be featured in Women’s Health or GQ.

PR is ultimately about building long term relationships and partnerships that are mutually beneficial. Be consistent in showing how you can add value with insightful, thought-provoking content or commentary and before long it will be journalists contacting YOU for your expert opinion.
