Stand Up For Startups

It’s true - not all workers are cut from the same cloth.

While some enjoy the structure and direction that an organisation provides, others might find freedom and fulfilment in being able to call the shots. Maybe you’re a natural-born leader or perhaps you have a brilliant idea that you’ve just been sitting on for far too long now; whatever your motivation for wanting to be an entrepreneur, running a startup is no easy feat, let alone one that’s successful.

So, what’s the secret to turning a bright idea into a booming business? We’re here to share 3 lessons from other triumphant founders to hopefully help you in doing the same!

See the Forest and the Trees

So, you’ve just started your business… Now more than ever are you likely paying more attention to every minor detail that’s occurring. From every document, package or even plate of food that’s leaving the kitchen; at this point in time, you’re probably triple checking everything. But sometimes, it’s these very details that can become so all-consuming that you forget to consider the bigger picture.

Our suggestion? Set yourself up for success by looking at your business from the top and from within, analysing not only the macro factors but individual pieces too - trust us, this way you’ll discover a lot more about your company than you ever thought possible, helping you to grow and thrive in the long-run.

It’s Not All About the Money

Let’s be honest; it’s the predominant reason that 90% of entrepreneurs start out in the first place. But one thing that you should come to terms with is that the vast majority of startups’ won’t actually get rich quick. And despite the value in building a business that’s profitable, one of the most valuable aspects that we tend to lose sight of is the social capital and learning experiences you pick up along the journey.

The lesson here? Though it’s possible that you’ll make a significant amount of money, make sure to savour the insights you gain from the company you keep, it will be far more effective in helping you put any failures or setbacks in the proper context.

Speaking of failures…

Embrace Your Defeat

When most people think of success, they often focus on the positive results instead of the challenges that have come before. However, embracing failure can be an invaluable tool in getting your business on the right track. Take Walt Disney for example, whose iconic Mickey Mouse drawing and design was rejected over 300 times before getting his first approval. Going on to build one of the biggest names in history, some could say that his perseverance is what allowed Walt Disney to get where it is today.

The key takeaway? By acknowledging and accepting failures as part of the journey, entrepreneurs can not only learn from their mistakes but become more resilient and grow from them too, especially when faced with similar or even more challenging situations further along the way.

There’s no doubt that being an entrepreneur is an experience unlike any other. Running your own successful business probably won’t turn out exactly as you imagined - but that doesn’t mean that it can’t turn out even better!
