Swipe Left on Digital Stress

There’s no denying that technology has improved our lives in many ways. At the touch of a button we have endless access to information, entertainment, healthcare, food and so much more. However, that endless access really is just that - never ending. And chances are, at some point or other, you’ve fallen victim to its negative effects, leading to what’s better known as digital stress.

A new term for a not-so-new problem that many people experience; digital stress refers  to the feelings of anxiety and overwhelm that can stem from the increasing reliance on and usage of digital technologies.

But even if you’re aware that your digital dependence is affecting your mental health, in this day and age it’s nearly impossible to escape the digital landscape. What can make a difference though is having the right tools to help handle such stress and even decrease it.

Set boundaries & take breaks. Set aside designated times during the day when you’re committed to keeping your devices at bay. Our rule of thumb? The 50-10 split - for every 50 minutes of screen time, take a ten minute break to shift your focus to something else, like moving or stretching instead.

Customise your device notifications. By only allowing notifications from the apps that you absolutely need, you will not only feel less compelled to check your devices more than necessary, but at the same time create a far more intentional and mindful connection with how you approach technology.

Prioritise self-care. Whether it’s exercise, mindfulness, sleep, spending time with family & friends or simply putting on a face mask and reading your favourite book; incorporating  daily dress-busting activities are essential to creating a sense of calm and boosting your overall mental and physical health.

The takeaway

The digital world is here to stay, but it doesn’t have to be a crux when it comes to your well-being! With the right tools and tricks you too can become the master of your screen time.
