To Rest or Rejuvenate?

Depending on what life decides to throw at you, sometimes it can feel like you're constantly operating at full speed. Your to-do list seems never ending; with your job, relationships, social life and physical & mental health all feeling like they should be taking priority.

Exhausting, right?

If you’re already drained by just the thought of what’s to come, much less how you might begin to tackle it all, you’re not alone. With approximately 60% of adults experiencing stress on a daily basis, and some of the highest burnout rates ever being recorded, it’s no wonder that we want to spend all our free time doing absolutely nothing. But simply sleeping or lounging around may not actually be the fix for our overwhelming exhaustion; and as counterintuitive as it may sound, rejuvenation and not rest, may just be our missing piece.

Rest VS. Rejuvenation: What’s the difference?

That’s correct, rest and rejuvenation are not the same thing. While rest generally refers to a passive state of being, rejuvenation is a state of feeling renewed, restored and ready to start fresh.

For the most part, we’re taught to cope with burnout by doing the former: stopping everything to focus on rest. And while this is crucial for calming and recalibrating our minds and bodies, the most powerful choice we can make to combat our exhaustion is to actually feel more alive; implementing rejuvenating and enjoyment-filled experiences into our daily routines instead.

From going for a brisk walk in the sun, cooking supper with your partner or simply keeping a notebook at your desk to doodle in between meetings; the way in which you choose to rejuvenate doesn’t have to require a lot of time or effort to create a long-lasting impact. It’s about prioritising intentional downtime, which as a result can leave us feeling not only more fulfilled but even more relaxed than we’re taught that other typically “rest-based” activities are thought to do.
