How much should I charge as a Personal Trainer?

As a personal trainer, especially using an app and online service, it’s hard to know whether you are charging enough. On one hand you don’t want to charge so little you can’t survive. But, you also don’t want to charge so much that no-one uses it.

How do you know where the sweet spot is? Well there’s many factors to look at to find the perfect price for you and your app.

Experience

Your level of qualifications and experience should be reflected in your price. People are willing to pay more for those they know have a proven track record. Plus, having a certificate, whether it’s yoga, PT, pilates etc., shows your clients that you’ve learned the information necessary to develop a safe and effective fitness program that will show results.

Target Market

Consider your clientele and the services you provide. If you have  a fairly specific niche where there is less competition, for example, chair yoga for the elderly or injury prevention exercises, you’re likely to be higher in demand and can charge accordingly. But make sure to check out your competitors rates!

Business Costs

Think about your expenses, rent for your studio, equipment, insurance, marketing, furthering your qualifications. All these need to be taken into consideration to ensure a sustainable business model. This is under your net profit margin - which you can calculate with the following formula:

Revenue - Costs / Revenue x 100

Flexible Subscriptions

Another suggestion we have is to offer flexible and/or tiered subscriptions. You could choose to offer a premium subscription that includes access to all of your content; live classes, on demand video/audio content, challenges, programs and chat, but then add a cheaper subscription that perhaps only gives people access to a video library for example. By doing this you are likely to appeal to a broader spectrum of people and budgets.

Understand your worth

Invest in continuous learning. Gaining more information, certificates and experiences will always add to your worth as a trainer.

Ask for feedback. Getting your clients to give you positive testimonials shows your worth. But this can also be handy in learning what you can improve on.

Do your market research. Stay on top of trends, competitor prices and client demands.

Hopefully this gives you an insight into what you can do to decide your rates, but always remember that it’s an ongoing process and your price can always be adjusted.
